  Issue 1 - 5th February 2009

From the Principal

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone, especially our many new families, to the 2009 school year.  Each year is unique with its own special blend of opportunities and achievements.  I look forward to sharing in the many activities which lie ahead.

Last week, I received the list of first round offers to our Year 12 Class of 2008.  The VCE results achieved by the girls were excellent so it was not surprising to see so many of them offered their first or second preferences.  What struck me most was how hard it is to make any generalisations about the directions they are pursuing.  Of the offers received, 90% were for university places and 10% for TAFE.  Of the university places, Monash proved the most popular with 30%, followed by the University of Melbourne at 20%, Deakin at 18%, RMIT at 8%, Victoria University, the Australian Catholic University and La Trobe at 4% and Swinburne 1%.

The range of courses chosen is testament to the diversity of interests amongst our graduates as well as the breadth of options now available.  Almost every imaginable choice is represented from art and design courses, health sciences, business studies, building and construction, law, medicine, engineering, teaching and more general arts and science programs.  The girls now enrolling in these courses, or deferring their courses until 2010 have been well prepared for further study and for life beyond school.  We wish them well.  From the Principal continued

Vale Joan Minson

24/07/1910 – 31/01/2009

The Board, Principal, Staff and Students of Toorak College are saddened by the passing of
Joan Minson, a much loved Old Girl of the School.  Joan was the only Old Girl who
attended all 4 campuses – Douglas Street, Glenferrie Road, The Towers (Lansell Road) and Mount Eliza.  She was President of the Old Girls’ Association and a member of
School Council.  We are grateful for Joan’s involvement and commitment to Toorak College over many years and, as a school community, we will miss her our dear friend.

Our thoughts are with the family, in particular her son Alistair and grandchildren Henry, Robert, Stuart, Emily, Frederick, Adrian, Will, Rowan, Alice, Hugh, Miranda and Chloe.
