The competition was moved to Pines Beach to seek shelter from the wind and provide the girls with a more acceptable wave for all standards of surfing. Prue Latchford (2000 Victorian Masters Champion) and her team of helpers including Jan Dunton (1999 Australian Malibu Champion) stationed themselves out in the lineup to provide safety for the girls and to help the students stay in the tag area. Apart from the selfish free surfers who intimidated the girls by riding right through them with their "Long Boards", the competition was a huge success.
PSC under the guidance of Jeff Vockler, Scotty Thorpe and Ricci Hawkins ran the event, assisted in a judging role by Amber Reason, 2 time Victorian Open Champion and 2 time Victorian Junior Champion. A special thanks to the various members of this great club who donated their time to assist with the running of the event. There was some sensational surfing going on, but above all, the girls had fun. It was great to see the girls laying on their boards in the tag area laughing and screaming at their team members. Anyone who wiped out, came up with a smile on their face.
The perpetual trophy has 15 tags on it and we hope that this event gets bigger and bigger and goes for at least the next 15 years. The girls all eagerly grabbed their "girlsurf 2001" T-shirts and wore them with pride. "girlsurf 2002" is on next March so write it in your calendars.
Thanks to Balin for the donation of the Major trophy and bags of goodies for the winners. Thanks to Sea Level for the donation of the "free raffle" prizes and the wetsuit for the Encouragement Award. Thanks also to OKE Surfboards for the donation of the Best Senior and Best Junior trophies. Also thanks to Melbourne Water for the bottles of water, they all went.
